Our last Poetry Postcard Activation of the year is set for Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Pritchard Beach. We’ll have postcard collage supplies, a postcard prompt provided by Cascadia 2050 and a talk about the history of the spot and plans to make it a waterfront paddling center. Bill Pickard will give the talk and he has created this great document on the vision for the center. It begins:
BACKGROUND & MAKING THE CASE
The Pritchard Island Beach Bathhouse is wonderful asset but it does not serve the South Seattle Community as well as it could, and it is only reserved for use by the community an average of 43 times per year. The RBWAC would be used daily from dawn till dusk. The RBWAC is about creating equitable access to the waterfront in South Seattle for underserved youth and the general public. People in more northerly neighborhoods, but in particular youth, have better access to beneficial water-dependent activities like swimming, and paddling. Access to vigorous aerobic exercise like this can lead to better academic, health and life outcomes.
The Poetry Postcard Activations were instituted to create awareness of the 20th season of the Poetry Postcard Fest, to allow postcard poets to get together in person and not just via the U.S.P.S. and to allow the Cascadia 2050 project to get some hands-on experience leading events. They were also designed to create greater awareness of the beautiful parks in the Rainier Beach neighborhood. Onda Origins will be providing coffee and pastries, but they will go quickly, so plan to arrive early. Also, we could use some volunteers to help with set-up and tear-down. We may have lunch after at Redwing and you are invited. Come get to know other postcard poets and share the joy of postcarding. Registration ends July 4 and the 20th Poetry Postcard Fest begins.
