Rancho grande mexican restaurant sign

Postcards of the Past and Future

From PPF committee member Margaret Lee:

I live in Tulsa on Route 66, where postcards are easy to find. You have seen the kind I mean: that map of the U.S. with a bold red line connecting Chicago to Los Angeles and a white shield with “66” in bold numbers. Or photos of the Metro Diner, or classic cars. Even better, the neon signs. We collect vintage neon in Tulsa and restore the signs, whether they point to anything or not. My two favorites are the Daylight Donuts and El Rancho Grande, which sports a gaucho with a wide-brimmed black hat and a neon lariat encircling the Mexican restaurant’s name. When they tried to remove the Meadowgold sign from 11th street, the uproar didn’t die down until the city refurbished the sign and erected a brick monument on which to display it. Postcard moments from the past.

Now it’s time to move on. The Poetry Postcard Fest has reinvented the postcard and enshrined the spontaneous poem in the culture of the new millennium. The words swirling in your mind are destined for your postcards. Only you see the world in a certain way. Only you know the sight outside your window. Only you can speak the feelings in your heart. Your recipients will treasure your cards and preserve them, like our Meadowgold sign. And soon you will possess a zany, colorful collection of verses and images from all over the world from people like you who want to reach out with their daily poems.

For many of us, the spontaneous compositions of the Fest revive our writing every year. I am so glad you decided to register! Why not invite a friend? Together, you could make or collect your stash of cards and gear up for the Fest. Most of all, trust your words and write with abandon! You might even surprise yourself!

Thank you, Margaret! Registration for the Poetry Postcard Fest is still open, REGISTER NOW! Join us THIS SUNDAY for a postcard celebration and potluck in Seattle, learn more HERE.
