Cascadia Poetics Lab in High Country News

On September 30, 2024, High Country News published the article “Remembering Colleen McElroy, the ‘literary North Star’ of the Pacific Northwest,” written by Robert Lashley. In the article, Cascadia Poetics Lab and Paul Nelson is mentioned: “With the noble and notable exception of Paul Nelson and the Cascadia Poetics Lab, McElroy died without receiving any of the flowers she deserved in the Pacific Northwest, ignored by the writers’ spinoff groups of Seattle’s Black upper class, who tried to redraw the culture center without including her in it.” We are honored to be acknowledged in this article, and continue to appreciate and remember Colleen McElroy’s literary impact.

A couple years back I steered a kayak over the stone remnants believed to be of that dammed weir and felt the tears of Southwind and his grandmother that broke the spell of ice and separation. In a moment I felt that wheel turning me, releasing the grief over my own people, still a mystery to me from centuries of migrations, of imperial assimilation, erased by the cold wind of empire and science and the myriad attempts to dam up the natural world with standardized time, supply chains, and rows and rows and rows of repeatable little boxes we stuff our brains and bodies into.
