Mapes Creek Daylighting Talk

August 14, 2026
by Ryukan

Our neighborhood creek, Mapes Creek or dxʷwuqʷəb in Lushootseed, which runs through Kubota Garden here in Rainier Beach, is a jewel that few people know even exists. That is because most of its course it runs through a pipe. A good section of the creek, in Be’er Sheva Park, was daylighted about ten years ago, but many wonder what would it take to daylight a much larger section.

That’s where Logan McClish comes in. According to his firm’s website: “Logan is a water resources engineer who specializes in evaluating the effects of land development on water resources and designing effective, ecologically friendly solutions.”

Join us Friday, August 21 at 6pm as we gather at the entrance to Mapes Creek where is hits daylight for the latest in our series of Arts & Culture Roundtable events that we are conducting in partnership with the Rainier Beach Action Coalition. Come to discuss your work in the neighborhood, meet with other artists and culture workers, or come just to see a vision of the creek that would be a boon to nature and the Rainier Beach neighborhood.
