Interview with El Habib Louai at Desolation Peak

August 27, 2025
by Zach Charles

On the morning of Wednesday, August 14, 2013, Habib and Paul Nelson awoke before 6A and were hiking with full packs up to “Jack’s Shack.” But after an hour, maybe less, they knew they were not going to make it with those heavy packs. They dropped them and took smaller packs about 6 hours up the mountain, to get to the top of Desolation Peak. They took their sweet time, as Paul introduced Habib to mountain huckleberries and they ate almost every one they saw. By the time they hit the blueberries, at a surprisingly high altitude, they ate a few, but were motivated to get to the fire lookout and the remarkable view. It was just to the west of the fire lookout where Habib and Paul sat down and conducted their interview of his life, his work, his visit to the U.S. and his approach to poetry.

In this session it will be a presentation of how the postcard fest developed, how the daysong developed, how I prepare for the fest and how participants attending prepare for the fest, as well as how to prepare for a successful daysong. The similarities of the daysong to serial poetry could be discussed, as well as the effort to put one’s self into the open, which has benefits in one’s own life.

Interview with Postcard Poet Laura Gamache

Part of the Cascadia 2050 mission is: to inspire artists and poets of the next generation to consider bioregionalism and intuitive poetic approach as a way to foster a more just and sustainable Cascadia by 2050. To this end, one of our goals is to interview people who help us spread awareness by having practices in their lives that reflect these values. This interview with Postcard Poet Laura Gamache, a Seattle who has published poetry in the usual places, such as chapbooks, journals and anthologies, and also unusual places, such as buses, is the first of the series.
