Celebrate Cascadia with us THIS SATURDAY!

THIS SATURDAY May 18, Cascadia Poetics Lab is hosting a Poetry and Posole celebration with poetry readings, book raffle, community and delicious food provided by Dr. Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs! Registration is still open! More information on the event can be found HERE!

May 18 marks the anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens and is also Cascadia Day, a day in which we celebrate the diverse bioregion we call home and acknowledge the power of the natural world surrounding us. All year, Cascadia Poetics Lab aims to honor Cascadia by cultivating community and engaging with poetry in Seattle and the Cascadia bioregion. Through events like this one, we hope to foster a spirit of community among poets and artists and bring awareness to the wonders of our bioregion.

REGISTER NOW for Poetry and Posole and enjoy a night of poetry, food, community and Cascadia. Further instruction regarding the event will be emailed to you once you have registered. Scholarships are available to those that need one! For more info on scholarships to this event, email veronica@cascadiapoeticslab.org. We hope to see you this weekend!

Barry McKinnon Interview (from July 2015)

Paul: You know, you moved up here and one of the first things you did as a teacher in Prince George – was it UNBC at the time when you moved here – the University of Northern British Columbia?
Barry: No, it was the College of New Caledonia.
Paul: And you were teaching English in a welding class?
BM: Yup, it was a technical school. We moved into a technical school before they built the college.
PN: And this is 1969?
BM: Yeah, 1969. But in that first year here we taught out of the high school. We’d start teaching at three in the afternoon after the high school was out, so we were a night school. We were kind of interlopers. The high school teachers thought, “oh, here are these smarty pants academics coming in and taking over the functions that we’ve provided!”
