“A few months after the entry of the United States into World War II, the Government of the United States without a shred of evidence of misconduct or disloyalty…” arrested 120,000 West Coast residents of Japanese ancestry and put them into concentration camps. I could say that it is hard to believe something like that could happen in the U.S, again, but in our hyper-polarized time, it can happen again surely as racist rumors about a certain town in Ohio are believed by millions of people.

Frank Abe is a co-editor of the new anthology The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration, which I quoted from a moment ago, and he talked with us about the book, how and why it came into being and what we can do to ensure nothing like this never happens around here again.

Frank Abe talks about the anthology Monday, October 21, 2024 at Third Place Books in Seward Park.
