Thinkingwith: Writing Strategies for Reconnecting to Earth Workshop

Next month, we will be welcoming poet, artist, teacher and astrologer Matt Trease as facilitator for another workshop, Thinkingwith: Writing Strategies for Reconnecting to Earth. This lab will focus on writing strategies, applicable for poetry or prose, for breaking the spell that objectifies and cuts us off from the earth and from place and all the living beings that we (often) obliviously live in relationship with. We’ll do that by intentionally widening the socially-imposed conventions of “normal” perception via some minor alterations to our daily writing practices. This workshop will explore writing by Stephen Harrod Buhner, Goertha, Gertrude Stein, Bernadette Mayer, and more.

Matt Trease is a member of the Cascadia Poetics Lab board and co-curates the Margin Shift reading series, and serves as the poetry editor for the CAELi Review. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. We hope you will join us for this eye-opening experience in furthering connection through writing!

A couple years back I steered a kayak over the stone remnants believed to be of that dammed weir and felt the tears of Southwind and his grandmother that broke the spell of ice and separation. In a moment I felt that wheel turning me, releasing the grief over my own people, still a mystery to me from centuries of migrations, of imperial assimilation, erased by the cold wind of empire and science and the myriad attempts to dam up the natural world with standardized time, supply chains, and rows and rows and rows of repeatable little boxes we stuff our brains and bodies into.
