Help Katie Sarah Zale Write Sam Hamill’s Biography

February 20, 2025
Veronica Martinez

Katie Sarah Zale, writer, co-editor of Winter in America (Again and facilitator of the CPL workshop Sam Hamill’s Narrow Road to the Interior, is currently writing the biography of Sam Hamill, poet and co-founder of Copper Canyon Press. Hamill’s work as a poet, editor and translator is highly impactful to poetry and is a backbone of the Cascadia Poetics Lab. Hamill’s work as the editor of Poets Against the War, a poetry anthology in response to George W. Bush’s attack on Afghanistan, has been inspirational in the publication of Winter in America (Again.

From Carla Stein of Nanaimo, BC, an attendee of Sam Hamill’s Narrow Road to the Interior Workshop:

“Katie Sarah Zale deftly communicates Sam Hamill’s poetic legacy as she walks participants through key aspects of Hamill’s life and his approach to poesis itself. Generative exercises inspired by Hamill’s own work, discussions of his belief that poetry directly interacts with human experience and his pivotal roles in collaborating and supporting his contemporaries, help participants mine their own life journeys and equally embrace both dark and joyful experiential jewels in the making of their poems.”

Katie is looking for contributions to support her writing of Sam Hamill’s biography! The writing of this biography is a huge yet vital undertaking with many expenses. CLICK HERE to donate if you can! Donations of $100 of more will be thanked in the book. We are so excited and supportive of Katie’s endeavors in capturing the life and legacy of such an influential figure.

Sanskrit translations, a deep bioregional sense of place and homages to dead (mostly) poet friends makes Andrew Schelling’s new book a compelling distillation of subjects he’s been tracking for over 40 years. Author of “Tracks Along The Left Coast: Jaime D’Angulo & Pacific Coast Culture” and “From the Arapaho Songbook” and many other titles, he lives in the mountains outside of Boulder, Colorado, and teaches poetry and Sanskrit at Naropa University. The new book is Forests, Temples and Glacial Rivers, published by Empty Bowl.
