Cascadia Poetics Lab in Cumberland

On August 22-24, 2025, Cascadia Poetics Lab’s sister organization Rain Shadow Poetics Lab is hosting Language and the Land, a multi-day poetry festival in Cumberland, B.C.! Rainshadow Poetics Lab is our Canadian connection predominantly organized by Matt Law and Adelia MacWilliam doing incredible poetic and bioregionalist work on Vancouver Island.

Language and the Land “brings together poets pursuing a sense of deep time and place from across greater Cascadia to pose the question, ‘What is a bioregional poetic practice?‘” and will feature readings, workshops and lectures featuring poets Paul Nelson, Harold Rhenisch, Garry Gottfriedson, Daphne Marlatt, Robert Bringhurst and Lorin Medley. Cascadia 2050, lead by Veronica Martinez, Zach Charles and Zaylan Jacobsen, will also have involvement in the festival.

We hope you will join us for a beautiful summer weekend of poetry and bioregionalism in the mountain-bike Mecca of Cumberland, bridging borders and barriers between USAmericans and our neighbors to the north. The similarities of the daysong to serial poetry could be discussed, as well as the effort to put one’s self into the open, which has benefits in one’s own life.

Interview with Postcard Poet Laura Gamache

Part of the Cascadia 2050 mission is: to inspire artists and poets of the next generation to consider bioregionalism and intuitive poetic approach as a way to foster a more just and sustainable Cascadia by 2050. To this end, one of our goals is to interview people who help us spread awareness by having practices in their lives that reflect these values. This interview with Postcard Poet Laura Gamache, a Seattle who has published poetry in the usual places, such as chapbooks, journals and anthologies, and also unusual places, such as buses, is the first of the series.
