Postcards at yəhaw̓’ (Indigenous Creatives Collective) in Rainier Beach

March 30, 2026
by Ryukan

Our next postcard activation is Wednesday, April 1 at 6pm at yəhaw̓, Two seasoned postcard poets, Zach Charles and your humble narrator will talk about the Poetry Postcard Fest and provide postcards and collage materials. yəhaw̓, Indigenous Creatives Collective is at 9674 51st Ave S, in Seattle, essentially next to Kubota Garden. (We have a postcard activation there April 18 from 11AM-1PM.)

yəhaw̓ gets their name from the Lushootseed language and this quote is on their website:

“The Creator has left the sky too low. We are going to have to do something about it, and how can we do that when we do not have a common language? …We can all learn one word, that is all we need. That word is yəhaw̓ – that means to proceed, to go forward, to do it.”

— Vi taqʷšəblu Hilbert (Upper Skagit) in her telling of Lifting the Sky

Vi Hilbert was a legendary local indigenous leader who was primarily responsible for saving Lushootseed, Puget Sound Salish. What an inspiration to write postcards! What a way to be an indigenous ally. Get your postcard groove on 90 days in advance of the 20th Poetry Postcard Fest and learn about local indigenous culture Wednesday at 6. More details on the postcard activations is here:https://cascadiapoeticslab.org/poetry-postcard-activations/

Postcarding and DaySonging (A Workshop). In this session it will be a presentation of how the postcard fest developed, how the daysong developed, how I prepare for the fest and how participants attending prepare for the fest, as well as how to prepare for a successful daysong. The similarities of the daysong to serial poetry could be discussed, as well as the effort to put one’s self into the open, which has benefits in one’s own life.

Interview with Postcard Poet Laura Gamache

Part of the Cascadia 2050 mission is: to inspire artists and poets of the next generation to consider bioregionalism and intuitive poetic approach as a way to foster a more just and sustainable Cascadia by 2050. To this end, one of our goals is to interview people who help us spread awareness by having practices in their lives that reflect these values. This interview with Postcard Poet Laura Gamache, a Seattle who has published poetry in the usual places, such as chapbooks, journals and anthologies, and also unusual places, such as buses, is the first of the series.
