Johnny Moses

Friday, January 13th, Johnny Moses conducts his fourth Red Cedar Circle at SPLAB. We were honored to have this remarkable story-teller at SPLAB and delighted to host a Red Cedar Circle starting at 7PM. Bring snacks if you like and a donation to the cause. Johnny conducts a circle on the 2nd Friday each month through April, 2012. More on Johnny here.

Coast Salish songs and stories are featured, along with prayers and snacks. The public is welcome to attend and donations are gratefully accepted to help Johnny continue his work. ($5-$20 suggested). Johnny is a master storyteller, oral historian, traditional healer and respected spiritual leader. Johnny, whose traditional name is Whis.stem.men.knee (Walking Medicine Robe), carries the Si.Si.Wiss (sacred breath, sacred life) medicine teachings and healing ceremonies of his Northwest Coast people.

Please join us for the Red Cedar Circle at 7PM on the 2nd Friday of each month through April, 2012.

    Hello Paul,

Thank you for these SPLAB updates. I’m hoping you might be willing to post about the new Cave Moon Press anthology, “Broken Circles–Poems about Food,” released in September 2011. The book is a collection of poems about food from local and international poets, and a little work horse on behald of raising funds and awareness of the need for contributions to food banks. Already, locally, we’ve organized venues at local cafes and schools and I’m wondering if there might be ways to work together in the coming months. Would love to hear from you and take care–Denise

Sure thing. Doug’s a good guy and when there’s a reading coming up, send a blurb & we can plug it. I have asked Doug to be a Cascadia sponsor, which would help get the word out as well.

Barry McKinnon Interview (from July 2015)

Paul: You know, you moved up here and one of the first things you did as a teacher in Prince George – was it UNBC at the time when you moved here – the University of Northern British Columbia?
Barry: No, it was the College of New Caledonia.
Paul: And you were teaching English in a welding class?
BM: Yup, it was a technical school. We moved into a technical school before they built the college.
PN: And this is 1969?
BM: Yeah, 1969. But in that first year here we taught out of the high school. We’d start teaching at three in the afternoon after the high school was out, so we were a night school. We were kind of interlopers. The high school teachers thought, “oh, here are these smarty pants academics coming in and taking over the functions that we’ve provided!”
