Zach Charles releases first book of poetry, 24 Portraits at 24!

Cascadia Poetics Lab volunteer and audio assistant Zach Charles has released their first book of poetry, 24 Portraits at 24, through Carbonation Press! The description of the book comes from Carbonation Press:

Twentyfour Self Portraits at Twentyfour is an exploration of young adulthood in the third decade of the 21st century. It asks questions of elders and ancestors that range from: Why do we still count the years based on Jesus? to: How do I leave this planet better than I found it? In it the poet stands between two mirrors and peers deeply into their reflection, looking for clues to help them better understand themself and their world.

Beginning as a committee member for the Poetry Postcard Fest, Zach Charles has quickly become a vital part of Cascadia Poetics Lab as a founding member of Cascadia 2050 (formerly the Youth Committee) and as Paul Nelson’s audio assistant for the Cascadian Prophets Podcast. They live near Alki Beach with their partner, cat, and dog, and they teach Spanish on Vashon Island. Their poetry practice consists of portraits, conversations, and an ongoing effort to compose 10,000 haiku, and they also make various multimedia art projects.

You can purchase 24 Portraits at 24 HERE! Listen now to the most recent podcast episode edited by Zach Charles, Wanda Coleman’s 2002 interview. We are so proud of Zach’s first published collection and are excited to be able to witness all of the beautiful work they create!

Giving Tuesday

Cascadia Poetics Lab is consistently supported by the work of dedicated volunteers and donors. Next Tuesday, December 3, 2024 marks Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving. Please consider financially supporting Cascadia Poetics Lab this Giving Tuesday so that we may continue to fund our programming!

Our organization provides a unique perspective as we organize bioregionally and explore poetry’s relationship to surrounding ecosystems and the present moment. We reject national boundaries in favor of a bioregional culture built for the 21st century. Cascadia Poetics Lab believes that our mission to empower people to practice poetry and deepen connections to place, self and the present moment is vital to the well-being of all living through the current environmental/political crises, no matter who you are.

Please consider a year end donation, sign up for a workshop, sponsor the podcast, make a donation targeted at our publishing imprint Watershed Press or buy a few copies of Cascadian Zen. CPL turns 31 on December 14, 2024, and we can use support at this time to go into 2025 in a financially robust way.

In the call, we stated: “We are looking for words that come from thoughtful reflection and compassion for the loss we feel for ourselves and this country. (Please no screeds.)” Still, we got many poems that were filled with righteous anger, on which we passed. The book features many poems that offer suggestions, pathways and even self-care tips for the new Winter in America. That very phrase “Winter in America” comes from Gil Scott-Heron, and was used by the editors as a sort-of invocation to Gil’s spirit and legacy. I
