In this interview on her book Vodou Visions with Sallie Ann Glassman, she discusses becoming a Manbo, or Vodou Priestess, Vodou, its history as a religion created by enslaved Africans, common misunderstandings about it, its power as an experiential religion, and deities or Lwas such as Ogou and the Bawon. She says that from a Vodou perspective, it is important to consider the entirety of one’s self, strengths and weaknesses, in order to tap into the fullness of one’s spirit and spiritual power. She goes even further, to argue that many of the personal trials we face in a society that values money above all else, even “worships the economy,” can come into stark relief and become manageable when we are able to observe them through the fullness of body, mind, and spirit that Vodou encourages.
